  • Title: From Cravings to Care Understanding and Treating Food Addiction

Abstract

Food addiction is an emerging field of study within the realm of addiction psychiatry, yet it remains insufficiently understood and inadequately addressed in both clinical practice and public discourse. This keynote lecture aims to bridge this gap by providing a comprehensive overview of food addiction, its underlying mechanisms, and effective therapeutic approaches.
Food addiction, characterized by an overwhelming compulsion to consume certain foods despite negative consequences, shares many similarities with substance use disorders. The presentation will begin with a detailed exploration of the neurobiological underpinnings of food addiction, highlighting the roles of neurotransmitters, and brain regions like the reward circuit. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for recognizing why certain individuals are more susceptible to developing addictive eating behaviors.
The lecture will also delve into the psychological and behavioral aspects of food addiction. Factors such as emotional eating, stress, and the influence of highly palatable, processed foods will be discussed. These elements contribute to a cycle of craving and consumption
that can be challenging to break without targeted intervention.
A significant portion of the presentation will be dedicated to examining the various treatment
modalities available for food addiction. Behavioral interventions have shown promise in helping individuals manage cravings and develop healthier eating habits. Additionally, the potential role of pharmacotherapy in treating food addiction will be explored, with a review of
current medications and their efficacy.
The lecture will conclude with a discussion on the broader implications of recognizing and treating food addiction. Public health initiatives, policy changes, and the need for increased research funding will be addressed. Emphasizing the importance of education and advocacy, the presentation aims to inspire healthcare professionals to approach food addiction with the same rigor and dedication as other forms of addiction.
In summary, this keynote lecture, "From Cravings to Care: Understanding and Treating Food Addiction," seeks to enhance the audience's understanding of food addiction and provide practical insights into effective treatment strategies. By raising awareness and promoting informed clinical practices, we can better support individuals struggling with this complex condition and ultimately improve their quality of life.
